History
Westerheim was first settled in June, 1871 by Norwegian settlers. The petition for the creation of the township was presented to county authorities on February 24, 1876.
Though action on the petition was deferred, it resumed on April 19 when the township was named Westerheim, meaning “western home.” The first town meeting took place on May 9, 1876.
