SUMMARY:"The Road to 1776" Program and LCHS Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“The Road to 1776” program and the Lyon County Historical Society Annual Meeting is on Thursday\, April 9 starting at 5:30 PM at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 W Lyon Street in Marshall.  This event is free will donation and open to the public. \n5:30 PM: Light Refreshments \n6:00 PM: Business Meeting (2025 Annual Report) \n6:30 PM: Program: “The Road to 1776” by Dr. Anita Talsma Gaul. \nAbout the Program: \nAt the conclusion of the Seven Years’ War in 1763\, Great Britain and the American colonies were on the best of terms. The war had strengthened their common identity and solidified the bonds of empire. \nYet at the same time\, the war also planted the seeds of mutual misunderstanding and suspicion. Just thirteen years later\, in 1776\, the American colonists declared their independence from Great Britain\, signaling their intent to permanently break the political bonds between them. \nWhat caused the relationship between Great Britain and its American colonies to collapse so rapidly? \nIn this presentation\, Dr. Anita Gaul explains the steps that led from the war that fused the bonds of empire to the war that broke them forever. \nDr. Anita Gaul is an historian who currently teaches at Minnesota West Community & Technical College and whose work focuses on local and regional history. Her published works include The Women of Southwest Minnesota and the Great War (2018) and “Living in Perfect Harmony: A Multiethnic Catholic Parish on the Minnesota Prairie\, 1881-1910” in the Journal of American Ethnic History (2010). She was named the 2026 Minnesota West Outstanding Educator and is the winner of the 2026 Minnesota Board of Trustees Educator of the Year Award for Excellence in Teaching. \nFor more information\, contact the Lyon County Museum at 507-537-6580 or director@lyoncomuseum.org

SUMMARY:Reflections Series: "Halcyon Days: Leisure at Lake Shetek" Program
DESCRIPTION:Janet Timmerman will present\, “Halcyon Days: Leisure at Lake Shetek” at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 West Lyon Street\, Marshall on Tuesday\, May 12 at 6:30 PM. \nNestled in Murray County\, Minnesota\, Lake Shetek holds a cherished spot in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Vacations\, picnics\, family gatherings\, and time at bible camps\, all create nostalgic memories at this peaceful lakeside haven. Stories of big fish\, plentiful wildlife and tales around the campfire are as much a man-made creation as a natural one. Amid the idyllic backdrop lies a sobering reality. Lake Shetek’s ecosystem is impacted by commercialized recreation and tourism. Despite vigilant efforts by residents and lake enthusiasts to address environmental degradation\, challenges persist. \n“Halcyon Days: Leisure at Lake Shetek” interweaves the rich tapestry of leisure history with the environmental realities of a prairie lake. It offers a compelling exploration of both nostalgia and the evolving landscape of Lake Shetek\, inviting readers to ponder the delicate balance between preservation and progress. \nJanet Timmerman has spent much of her life in Murray County. She is a graduate of Southwest Minnesota State University and holds a master’s degree in history from Kansas State University. She has helped produce several publications about rural areas including Draining the Great Oasis: An Environmental History of Murray County\, Little by Little: The History of End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum\, and SSLRH essay series chapbooks\, “Draining the Great Oasis\,” and  “Red Earth\, White Road: The Joseph Laframboise Family in the U.S. Dakota War of 1862.” She and her husband\, Mark\, live on an acreage not far from the Murray County farm where she grew up. They are the third and fourth generations\, respectively\, to manage portions of their family’s farms. \nThe program is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served.  Programs at the Lyon County Museum are sponsored by members.  For more information\, contact the Lyon County Museum at 507-537-6580 or director@lyoncomuseum.org
