DESCRIPTION:Sketches of Minnesota in Marshall \nThursday\, September 10 \nMarshall YMCA\, 200 S A St \n  \nJoin the Minnesota Humanities Center\, Danger Boat Productions\, and Marshall community for the Sketches of Minnesota civic improv comedy tour! These free events use laughter and comedy to celebrate Minnesota communities\, promote dialogue\, bridge divides\, and help find ways to work constructively across differences in today’s political environment. \n  \nBeginning with a catered meal\, these gatherings invite audience members to share what makes their town great\, what they think people get wrong about it\, what local divisions concern them\, and what future they imagine. An improv comedy troupe listens in on the conversations\, takes everything they heard from residents\, and brings it to life on stage through entirely unscripted improv comedy theater. \n  \n5:00–6:00 PM: Doors open / Community hour \n6:00–7:15 PM: Dinner \n7:15–8:00 PM: Improv show \n8:00–8:30 PM: Talkback \n  \nHost Partners: Lyon County Historical Society Museum and Visit Marshall \n  \nThe work of the Minnesota Humanities Center is to create a stronger Minnesota by increasing our understanding of the beauty\, wisdom and stories of its people. DESCRIPTION:Patty Wetterling and Joy Baker will present on their book\, “Dear Jacob: A Mother’s Journey of Hope” at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 West Lyon Street\, Marshall on Saturday\, September 19 at 2:00 PM \nAbout the Program: \nOn October 22\, 1989\, in the small town of St. Joseph\, Minnesota\, eleven-year-old Jacob Wetterling was kidnapped at gunpoint. \nThe disappearance of Jacob was a story that haunted Minnesota and transformed the nation. In this special author visit\, Patty Wetterling shares the intimate\, behind-the-scenes account of those decades – not just as a search for a missing son\, but as a testament to a mother’s unwavering love and a community’s resilience. In this fascinating presentation\, we’ll uncover hidden roadside curiosities\, explore historic windmills; stone buildings and formations\, and hear stories that bring the region’s past to life\, from railroad depots to churches\, to Carnegie libraries and so much more. This presentation features 18 counties of prairie beauty and one-of-a-kind landmarks. You will see familiar landscapes in a whole new way. \nJay Grammond is a Minnesota-based photographer\, author\, and public speaker known for capturing the essence of Americana\, rural landscapes\, remembering our veterans\, and fading history through his lens. As the creative force behind J Grammond Photography\, he leads photography workshops\, speaks at cultural and historical events\, sells Fine Art; and publishes books that preserve visual stories of the past. His work has been featured in galleries\, healthcare spaces\, radio\, tv\, and podcast programs; and educational programs throughout the region. DESCRIPTION:Anita Gaul will present\, “Living (and Fighting) Together in the Bishop’s Colony: St. Eloi’s First Thirty Years” at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 West Lyon Street\, Marshall on Tuesday\, September 29 at 6:30 PM \nAbout the Program: \nBishop John Ireland of St. Paul established ten Catholic colonies in western Minnesota from 1876-1883\, including Ghent. Although the Bishop envisioned his colonies to be harmonious and prosperous settlements\, Ghent’s new St. Eloi parish experienced great turmoil as the Flemish and French-Canadian Catholics attempted to build a church. Dr. Gaul explores the fractious relationship between St. Eloi’s ethnic groups and the reasons why they were able to continue worshipping together in the same parish. \nDr. Anita Gaul currently teaches at Minnesota West Community & Technical College. Her work as an historian focuses on local and regional history. Her published works include The Women of Southwest Minnesota and the Great War (2018)\, Homely Girls and Pretty Babies: A History of the Murray County Fair (2013)\, and “Living in Perfect Harmony: A Multiethnic Catholic Parish on the Minnesota Prairie\, 1881-1910” in the Journal of American Ethnic History (2010).
