DESCRIPTION:The West Central Minnesota Historical Association traveling exhibit\, The Great War; the Great Impact: How WWI Hit Home in West Central Minnesota\, opens at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 W Lyon St\, Marshall on December 10.  The traveling exhibit runs in Marshall until January 18. \nThe West Central Minnesota Historical Association (WCMHA) is a collaboration of the county and area historical societies and museums of 10 counties in West Central Minnesota. The counties included are Big Stone\, Chippewa\, Kandiyohi\, Lac Qui Parle\, Lincoln\, Lyon\, Redwood\, Renville\, Swift and Yellow Medicine. The purpose of this collaboration is to promote and tell the history of West Central Minnesota. \nThe traveling exhibit has been financed in part with funds provided by the State of Minnesota from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the Minnesota Historical Society. \nThe exhibit is available to view during regular museum hours: Mon\, Tues\, Wed\, Fri 10:00-5:00\, Thursday 10:00-7:00\, and Saturday 10:00-4:00

DESCRIPTION:The Holiday Home Tour is a fundraiser for the Lyon County Historical Society and is Sunday\, December 2\, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.\, tickets $20/each. \nThe tour can be done in any order. The ticket book includes a description of each home and the museum’s Heritage Room exhibit along with a map. \nThe Lyon County Museum will be open from Noon – 4:00 p.m. on the day of the tour for cookies and refreshments. The museum is decked out for the holidays. DESCRIPTION:The traveling exhibit\, Symbol of Freedom\, opens June 14 at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 W Lyon St\, Marshall.  The exhibit runs until September 8.  The traveling exhibit was organized by the Siouxland Heritage Museums\, Sioux Falls\, SD.  For more info: 507-537-6580 or director@lyoncomuseum.org \nThe flag stands for our past\, our present\, and our future.  It represents our principles\, our freedoms\, and our opportunities.  It honors our heritage\, our diversity\, and our unity.  Our flag is a symbol of everything that is America.  But how did it get to be what it is? This exhibit was organized by the Siouxland Heritage Museums in Sioux Falls S.D. Funding was provided by the Mary Chilton Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution through the Mary Chilton DAR Foundation\, Sioux Falls\, S.D.

SUMMARY:Minnesota 1st Volunteer Regiment Reenactor
DESCRIPTION:The Lyon County Museum\, 301 W Lyon St\, will host David Johnson on Monday\, June 4 at 6:30 pm.  David Johnson is a Historical Reenactor who will tell the story from the perspective of an eye witness of the Minnesota 1st Volunteers at Gettysburg and how they saved the day on July 2\, 1863.  Free event and light refreshments will be served. \nAbout the Presenter: \nDavid Johnston graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in history. He went on to graduate studies at Bethel Theological Seminary in St. Paul and has served as a pastor since 1980. He is presently the Lead Pastor at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Marshall. As a student of history\, he has focused his studies on the Revolutionary War\, the Civil War and American Presidents. He has taught in the Augsburg University College of the Third Age and recently the SMSU Gold College\, and has lectured across the Twin Cities on American history over the last 20 years. \nFree event and light refreshments will be served.  For more information\, contact the museum at 507-537-6580 or director@lyoncomuseum.org

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mary Jones\, Director of Extended Learning & Academic Outreach at SMSU\, will present on Tenement Life for the Immigrants in New York City\, 1890s on Tuesday\, May 22 at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 W Lyon St\, Marshall.  The program starts at 6:30pm.  Over 23 million immigrants came to America between 1881 and the mid 1920’s.  Life in America was a hard life for most immigrants in a city filled with overcrowding\, crime\, disease and gritty reality.  Dr. Mary Jones will explore the life of families in the tenements as documented through the photography of Jacob Riis.
