SUMMARY:1910: Building a Legacy by Gavin Van Moer Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Gavin Van Moer will discuss his new book “1910: Building a Legacy” at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 W Lyon St in Marshall on Tuesday\, September 7 at 6:30 PM.\n\n\nDescription:\n1910 is a historical narration that follows the timeline of numerous immigrant families coming to Southwest Minnesota. Along their story lines we see immigrants come through Ellis Island\, colonize French Canada\, and even some who have to bury their children at sea due to horrendous travel conditions. The sacrifice for all was great but their legacy prevails. As their children grow up they fight through drought\, depression\, wars\, and death. We follow along soldiers in WWll\, sergeants in peaceful Germany\, SW MN farmers and teachers\, and throughout the book you get an incredible comprehensive history of how humanity has progressed in SW MN from dirt floor houses in the prairie to modern farms. A story greatly relatable to all who have lived in Lyon County for over the past 100 years. Through stories of faith\, love\, and family we follow along generations of Americans from the moment of there birth to their tragic death.\n\n\nAbout the Author:\nGavin Van Moer is a small town kid from Tracy\, MN. A 2017 graduate from South Dakota State University\, Gavin graduated with a Bachelors of Science in History specializing in teaching. Although he is a full time hog farm\, he has a passion for history and a determination to preserve his family’s legacy. Dedication to research\, one on one interviews\, and creative writing has helped produce a well rounded\, intriguing\, and historically accurate reading experience.\n\n\nThis program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:The Beautiful Snow by Cindy Wilson Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Cindy Wilson will discuss her book “The Beautiful Snow: The Ingalls Family\, the Railroads\, and the Hard Winter of 1880-81” at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 W Lyon St in Marshall on Tuesday\, September 21 at 6:30 PM.\n\n\nDescription:\n“The Long Winter is one of the most memorable novels in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series. It beautifully details the dramatic events of a harrowing winter with months of never-ending blizzards leading to railroad blockades that all but cut off fledgling communities.\nBut what really happened during the Hard Winter of 1880–81?\nLively and rewarding\, The Beautiful Snow is a new look at the Hard Winter. Pulling from nearly three thousand regional newspaper articles\, The Beautiful Snow weaves the historical record around and through Wilder’s fictionalized account of The Long Winter. From the tireless efforts to dig out the railroad blockades\, to lavish oyster parties\, to carefully spun boosterism\, the Hard Winter comes to life with extraordinary tales of survival\, resilience\, and defiance that adds rich context to Wilder’s beloved novel.”\n\n\nAbout the Author:\nCindy Wilson fell in love with the Little House books in third grade\, when she selected On the Banks of Plum Creek from the library. The series captivated her then and has ever since\, with The Long Winter still being her favorite.\nCindy is passionate about history and enchanted by the prairie landscape\, and when not meticulously poring over newspaper archives\, she enjoys traveling\, delving into architecture\, creating art quilts\, reading\, hiking\, biking\, or going out to watch storms as a trained weather spotter for the National Weather Service. She especially treasures time with her daughter\, Laura\, who at any given moment is living in some remote corner of the globe\, exploring other cultures and histories.\nWhile Cindy’s soul is most refreshed in South Dakota\, she lives in southern Minnesota. And while she spent two years immersed in the Hard Winter of 1880–81\, her ideal day is actually eighty degrees with a smidge of humidity.\n\n\nThis program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Victims of Foul Play: A True Story of One Man's Dark Secrets by Patricia Lubeck Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Patricia Lubeck will discuss her book “Victims of Foul Play: A True Story of One Man’s Dark Secrets” at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 W Lyon St in Marshall on Tuesday\, October 12 at 6:30 PM.\n\n\nDescription:\nClarence Larson married twice. Both of his wives met suspicious ends . . . and yet\, he was never convicted of any crime. How can that be? In this masterful exploration of Larson’s life\, historian Patricia Lubeck illuminates the failures of procedure and early forensic science that seemingly allowed a murderer to walk free. From the horrifying “accident” that killed his first wife Martha to the strange series of circumstances surrounding the “disappearance” of his second wife Jean\, Victims of Foul Play paints a vivid portrait of a sinister man. Richly detailed\, with information drawn from original source material and the author’s personal interviews with key players in Larson’s story\, this chilling and compelling true crime story is a tribute to two women who deserve truth and justice.\n\n\nAbout the Author:\nPatricia Lubeck grew up in the small town of Echo\, Yellow Medicine County Minnesota. She graduated from Echo High School\, then moved to California where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of California. Years later\, she returned to Minnesota where she became the director of the Yellow Medicine County and Redwood County Museums. Her first book was published in 2012. She spends her time researching and writing true crime stories from Minnesota’s early history. She enjoys traveling and spending time in museums and historic places. History is important\, must be preserved\, and is meant to be shared.\n\n\nThis program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: The Great Storm: Minnesota’s Victims in the Blizzard of January 7\, 1873
DESCRIPTION:The Lyon County Museum will host a book talk featuring Kandiyohi County native\, Carolyn Mankell Sowinski. She has written a book about a 3-day blizzard which occurred 150 years ago. In her book\, The Great Storm: Minnesota’s Victims in the Blizzard of January 7\, 1873\, Sowinski has identified 84 people from 31 counties in the state who died in this storm: men and women; children and babies; Civil War veterans and recent immigrants; homesteaders and villagers; state residents and visitors. Friends died together; neighbors died together; family members died together. Many died alone—suffering for one\, two\, or all three days.\nIn her presentation Sowinski will share the stories of five Lyon County victims: Marvin Chase\, Loren Fox and daughter Winona\, Asle Olsen\, Miss Oleson. Sowinski will read excerpts about the storm\, highlight some historic documents about the victims\, and provide helpful hints when doing research.\nThe book talk will be at 6:30 pm on Monday\, April 17\, 2023. Sowinski will have books for sale at the event (cash or check). The author has five books about her ancestors and Minnesota history available on Amazon.com.
