SUMMARY:What the Railroads Brought to the High Plains
DESCRIPTION:What the Railroads Brought to the High Plains \nThis program will cover the chronology and highlights of the development of the railroad system in the High Plains of Minnesota and the Dakotas. Emphasis will be the various types of rail transport that were utilized to develop the diverse regions and economies of the region. \nThis presentation will be conducted by Rick Mills.  Rick Mills of Hermosa is a fifth generation resident of the Black Hills region in western South Dakota\, and a lifelong railroad enthusiast. He currently serves as the Director of the South Dakota State Railroad Museum in Hill City\, a position he has held since the Museum’s opening in 2010. \nMills wrote and published his first book on railroad history in 1985 while a freshman at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology\, and has since authored five books on regional railroad history\, co-authored or edited six other books\, and produced articles\, scripts\, and photo essays for history publications and video productions. \nHe has been involved with programming for South Dakota Public Broadcasting\, the History Channel\, and the Discovery Channel\, and is a presenter for the South Dakota Humanities Council Speakers Bureau.

DESCRIPTION:The Holiday Home Tour is a fundraiser for the Lyon County Historical Society and is Sunday\, December 2\, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.\, tickets $20/each. \nThe tour can be done in any order. The ticket book includes a description of each home and the museum’s Heritage Room exhibit along with a map. \nThe Lyon County Museum will be open from Noon – 4:00 p.m. on the day of the tour for cookies and refreshments. The museum is decked out for the holidays. The trees stay lit until New Year’s Eve. \nView decorated trees by non-profit organizations\, businesses\, and service organizations. \nTo vote for your favorite(s)\, place money in a box located by each tree. The top 3 organizations/businesses with the most money in their boxes will win the 2018 tree walk. They will receive Marshall Chamber dollars. \nAll proceeds from the boxes will go to benefit the Lyon County Historical Society’s mission of preserving and presenting Lyon County history. \nThe trees are available to view during regular museum hours: \nMonday\, Tuesday\, Wednesday\, Friday: 10:00-5:00 \nThursday: 10:00-7:00 \nSaturday: 10:00-4:00 \nSunday: Closed \nThe museum is closed on November 22 & 23 and December 25.

DESCRIPTION:The Lyon County Museum\, 301 W Lyon St\, will host David Johnson on Monday\, June 4 at 6:30 pm.  David Johnson is a Historical Reenactor who will tell the story from the perspective of an eye witness of the Minnesota 1st Volunteers at Gettysburg and how they saved the day on July 2\, 1863.  Free event and light refreshments will be served. \nAbout the Presenter: \nDavid Johnston graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in history. He went on to graduate studies at Bethel Theological Seminary in St. Paul and has served as a pastor since 1980. He is presently the Lead Pastor at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Marshall. As a student of history\, he has focused his studies on the Revolutionary War\, the Civil War and American Presidents. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mary Jones\, Director of Extended Learning & Academic Outreach at SMSU\, will present on Tenement Life for the Immigrants in New York City\, 1890s on Tuesday\, May 22 at the Lyon County Museum\, 301 W Lyon St\, Marshall.  The program starts at 6:30pm.  Over 23 million immigrants came to America between 1881 and the mid 1920’s.  Life in America was a hard life for most immigrants in a city filled with overcrowding\, crime\, disease and gritty reality.  Dr. Mary Jones will explore the life of families in the tenements as documented through the photography of Jacob Riis.
